Will you be ready in 22 days?
What happens in 22 days you ask? That is when analog broadcasting ends. All broadcasting will be in HD and if you don't have cable or satellite service you won't be able to watch TV and more importantly you won't be able to watch channel 13.
If you don't want to make the jump to cable or satellite then you will need a converter box. You can apply for a $40 coupon to get your box cheaper. I applied for my coupon, two per house, and we got our boxes. My boxes only ended up costing about $10 each after coupon.
My kids now think we have cable since with the converter box you get so many more channels. In fact, I now have 3 channel 13's!

Just a heads up. The HEB off of 1-10 and blalock has the converter boxes for 40 bucks. So you can get them for free if you have the coupons!!

I got the RCA model DTA800B1. The cost was $49.99 at Wal-mart.
There are many different brands and I am sure the set up is pretty much the same but I wanted to get a brand that was compatible with my universal remote, since this comes with one and you have to use it to change your channels, and I didn't want to have another remote to lose.
I really like the picture quality and the addition of the extra channels with it, but I will also be purchasing a HD antenna to be mounted on my roof for stronger signals and more channels, since you can only get so many channels with the old rabbit ears.

I ordered mine from here http://www.consumerelecgroup.com/products.php?cat=13
When you order two they are $40 each with free shipping. I did receive them and they are listed on the DTV2009.org site as a valid place to use the coupons.

The bigger HEB's (Pearland, HWY 6 at Sienna Plantation, Hwy 99 at Fry, Bunker Hill and I10) usually have one or more brand boxes at $40. If you get 2, the $80 purchase (free!) kicks out a coupon good for $3 worth of gas at their gas pumps! Don't need converter boxes? Get the coupons anyway, get the boxes and gas at HEB, and donate the boxes to Interfaith Ministries to install for needy folks.
