Curve Ball (John's Voice)

Just when I thought my running was right on schedule, I get thrown a couple of big curves. First, I had Monday off and I thought about a destination run at Memorial Park and since my mileage had crept up to around 25 miles a week, maybe a 9 miler would be a great way to start this week. Not when the heat index was 105, how very stupid. I made it 5 and I hit a wall or more like a open oven door. Definitely not the smartest thing I have ever done and it was a valuable lesson, because it took awhile to feel normal again and after experiencing something I call, a feeling of doom. It's that mysterious sensation in my mind and body, where I have pushed myself to hard in the heat and I'm not quite sure that I'm going to make it. We won't do that again.

Next, after recovering from possible heat exhaustion, I resumed my training, mixing in some weight training and elliptical cardio along with a nice 8 miler Wednesday night after work. I felt great afterwards, but only to run into that irritating injury of shin splints the next morning. This put me on the shelf for a couple of days and under the advisement of my coach, Adela, I have been focusing on more stretching and really listening to my body, so not to disrupt my training. The plan is to slowly build back to a 25 mile week here within two weeks and to remember that this is a marathon not a sprint. I think I'm going to golf for the next two days to realign my focus.
